Chilika Tourism Zones & Entry Points
Depending on your interests, Chilika Lake can be approached via three main entry points:
- Satapada (Puri side): Located 50 kms from Puri. This is the most popular zone for watching Irrawaddy Dolphins and cruising to the Sea Mouth (where Chilika meets the Bay of Bengal).
- Barkul (NH-16 side): Located 100 kms from Bhubaneswar. Ideal for speed boating to Kalijai Temple island and exploring the bird sanctuary zones. Has a premium OTDC water sports complex.
- Rambha (Ganjam side): Located at the southern tip. Famous for scenic islands (Breakfast Island, Honeymoon Island) and peaceful, untouched lake views.
Nalabana Bird Sanctuary
During winters (from November to February), Chilika hosts over a million migratory birds from Siberia, Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, and Mongolia. Nalabana Island, situated in the heart of the lake, is a designated bird sanctuary where you can view nesting flamingos, pelicans, herons, and spoonbills via boat safaris.
